Descrição do evento

Evaluating to make a difference:
Achieving results through learning and accountability

The conference will focus on How to identify “what works” based on robust evidence within tight time and resource constraints? Continuing with the UKES policy of addressing topical priorities and retaining a strong practical emphasis, conference themes will include:

  • Real time evaluation: how can evaluation help decision makers adapt to a volatile operating environment? For example, through small scale piloting and trialling.
  • Assessing impact: can evaluation combine analytical rigour to identify value added as well as cost effectiveness/value for money?
  • Promoting change and innovation: how can evaluation contribute to effective risk management?
  • Embedding evaluation in organisations: is evaluation independence compatible with organisational learning?
  • Professionalising evaluation: what are the evaluation capabilities and competencies which make a difference?

Keynote speakers include:

  • Owain Service, Deputy Head of Behavioural Insights Team, The Cabinet Office
  • Professor Denise Lievesley, Head of School of Social Science and Public Policy, King’s College London
  • Ben Ramalingam, Research Associate, Overseas Development Institute

Pre-conference Workshops

The following pre-conference workshops will take place on the morning of 17 April 2013 at Senate House, University of London.

Introduction to systematic reviews
Professor Terri Piggot, Co-Chair, Campbell Collaboration Methods Group

Evaluation capacity building in the Third Sector
Deb James, Voluntary Sector Manager, Charities Evaluation Services

This practical and participative workshop will be facilitated by Charities Evaluation Services (CES), one of the UK’s longest-established providers of evaluation support and training for the third sector.  During the workshop participants will have the opportunity to share their own experiences and learn from others, and from CES’ 23 years of experience of evaluation capacity-building.  We will consider:

  • the context for evaluation in the third sector and the challenges
  • how to rise to the challenges - different approaches to developing our capacity
  • what can be learnt from good practice in the sector
  • how we can ensure that evaluation in the third sector is both useful and used.
